Dr Lining (Arnold) Ju
Heart attack is the leading cause of death in Australia, accounting for almost 11% of all deaths annually. Unfortunately, the effect of current anti-clotting drugs has done little to decrease mortality rates, with more than three-fourths of patients taking these drugs still having a fatal event. When Dr Arnold Ju, was studying for his PhD in biomedical engineering (BME), his father suffered a heart attack. Since joining the University of Sydney, Dr Ju, as an emerging leader in biomedical engineering, has been pioneering innovative biomechanical micro-technologies to predict and prevent heart disease and blood clots. The grant will help Dr. Ju accelerate the creation of cutting-edge point-of-care biochips that can assess anti-clotting medications, reduce blood clotting risks, and screen patients for uncontrolled bleeding hazards. These microdevices will support doctors' decisions regarding cardiovascular patient diagnosis, blood clotting progression monitoring, and treatment course optimisation.
