Microplastics or tiny plastic particles (less than five millimetres in diameter), pollute the environment, ending up in the oceans and being consumed by marine life. They are then found in the human food chain via indirect ingestion of seafood. Dr Zargar’s passion to find a solution for the issue of microplastic contamination of water saw her secure a prestigious ARC DECRA fellowship in 2021. Dr Zargar aims to develop ‘smart’ membranes specifically designed to efficiently remove microplastics from aquatic and wastewater treatment systems. The grant will support her to continue with the innovative microplastics project at the School of Engineering, Edith Cowan University, contributing to a safer and healthier environment.
